Hiro nods and gets into lifting position. Rubbing his clammy hands on his pants, he grasps the bar tightly, getting a feel for the textured metal.

Well, to Hiro's credit, the bar actually raises up, but the poor boy is struggling to get his arms straightened out for a full lift.
